Parasites
Parasites can present a severe health risk to young puppies and even adult dogs.
Fleas are probably the most common parasite of them all.
At a very young age a puppy can pick up fleas. Usually this is from the mother but they can also be acquired from other sources outside the home.
Flea eggs hatch into a larval stage which feeds on debris and organic matter and lives freely in the environment of your home or outside. Fleas feed on their animal hosts, but spend the majority of their time off the animal. The adult flea will lay it's eggs on the dog's coat and then these fall off. The eggs are most often found in the carpet, bedding,or anywhere your dog or puppy spends most of it's time. When checking your dog for fleas, look on the lower back area above the tail and at the base of the ears. There you may actually be able to see the fleas moving around on the skin. Remember it is always best to start tackling the problem of fleas before your puppy gets infested. Prevention is the key to winning the battle against fleas. Although each flea only consumes a small drop of blood, fleas usually attack in large numbers and a really severe infestation can lead to the onset of anemia and in extreme cases, even death. Thankfully, the adult flea is the most sensitive to flea prevention products.
Your flea control program should also involve the treatment of your home and outside in the yard. There are many good products available at pet shops and department stores. Some of these products are also effective in the treatment of ticks.
Another thing to take into consideration with the problem of fleas is that they are a major transmitter of tapeworms. It is necessary to treat for tapeworms at the same time that you are dealing with a flea problem.
Puppies can become infected with parasites even before they are born or sometimes later from their mother's milk. It is also possible to contract worms from insect bites, or eating feces. It is important to get the puppy examined by a vet to check for parasites, continuing every three weeks until they are 16 weeks old. You can use tablets or drops to treat hookworm and roundworm every two weeks until the puppy is twelve weeks of age. Because puppies do not have autoimmune systems that are fully developed, they need the extra protection provided by Core vaccines. It is a must, that you get them immunized against such illnesses as rabies, distemper and parvovirus and checked for heart worms and other ailments by a vet.
Puppies are much like children, they are susceptible to common illnesses and infections. It is the course of wisdom to limit contact with other dogs until your puppy has had all the recommended immunizations (except those that you know have had their vaccinations)
Every puppy deserves the best start in life. But this is also an ongoing thing. A dog should have the benefit of an annual check up so that any problems such as ear infections, dental disease, heart problems and skin infections etc can be detected and dealt with promptly. So regular visits to the vet, a good diet, lots of sunshine, fresh air and exercise equals a long life.
