HVAC systems create a comfortable atmosphere in commercial buildings by conditioning the air and making it either warmer or cooler, depending on the outside weather and the needs of the occupants. Though their capabilities have become indispensible, it is hard to ignore the amount of money the HVAC systems add to the energy bill. In fact, HVAC systems can account for 40% – 60% on the bill every month. While this number is rather large, it can also be viewed as a way to save. Simply replace your commercial HVAC systems with newer, more energy friendly technology.

When it is time to upgrade your HVAC system to newer technology, there are several things to keep in mind to make the purchase worth the investment. Your initial step should be a total situation evaluation. What does your company have now? What is your end goal for this overhaul? How much is in the budget for a new HVAC system? While these seem like obvious concerns, it is important to take complete control of the situation from the beginning. Overspending defeats the purpose of money saving systems, but not spending enough may leave you with an inadequate system. Just remember, some of the initial costs will be offset by energy savings that are acquired over the life of the system.

You must also gather up to date information regarding your commercial building. Renovations and other changes will have altered your thermal loads. Some changes may reduce your needs. This will allow for the purchase of a smaller system, equaling more energy savings for your business. Take note of all of the energy efficiency changes your building has undergone over the years. General maintenance should have sealed any leaky ducts. Low emissive windows and reduced lighting levels will also allow for the purchase of a smaller HVAC system.

Technology advances every day, promising new and more energy efficient equipment. New heating, ventilation and cooling systems use less energy while providing better air conditioning abilities. Occupant comfort will increase and energy bills will decrease. The correct upgrades are really a win – win situation for all who choose to implement them. Just remember that the most effective changes are the ones that are thought out properly. Stick to your budget and seek out expert advice to buy the correct size HVAC unit for your commercial building and begin reaping the benefits immediately.

As research and development continues to progress on HVAC systems, the outlook looks promising in the field of chiller systems. These systems are created to be used in larger commercial buildings. Combined, heat and power (or CHP) systems are also looking like a viable option. These systems are revolutionary. They use the buildings waste heat to cool the atmosphere. This capability will lessen the energy bill greatly. Some estimates promise a reduction of up to 30% or 40%. The end goal for this technology is to combine the new systems into packages and put them on the market. Keep abreast of technology trends and implement them when the time is right.
